In October 2024, in one of the mobile medical clinics supported by The Tandana Foundation, we visited the community of Moraspungo in the parish of Quichinche. There I had the opportunity to see Nayry Flores Cachimuel again. Now 14 years old, she was born without the ear canal in her left ear. Her mother noticed she couldn’t hear when she was 4 years old. At the age of 8, she was referred to the San Vicente de Ibarra Hospital. The hospital did not have a solution to her problem, so they referred her to the Baca Ortiz Hospital in Quito, which specializes in children. Unfortunately, the specialists explained to her family that she was born without an auditory canal and that it was not possible to do any surgery to help her, so she could only use a hearing aid to help her hear. They provided her with one, but it did not last long.
Lista para alcanzar sus sueños gracias a un nuevo audífono
En el mes de octubre de 2024 en una de nuestras Brigadas médicas visitamos la comunidad de Moraspungo en la parroquia de Quichinche, allí tuve la oportunidad de volver a ver a Nayry Flores Cachimuel de 14 años, nació sin el conducto auditivo en su oído izquierdo por lo cual no escuchaba, su Madre se dio cuenta cuando tenía 4 años. A los 8 años fue referida al hospital San Vicente de Ibarra, allí no tenían solución a su problema, por lo que la refirieron al hospital Baca Ortiz en Quito especialista en niños, desafortunadamente allí le los especialistas les explicaron que la niña nació sin el conducto auditivo y que no era posible hacer ninguna cirugía para ayudarle, que solamente podía usar audífono para escuchar, allí le proveyeron, pero no duro mucho tiempo
Desde hace 5 años Nayry no tiene audífono, La mala situación económica de su familia no permitió que compraran uno nuevo, ella estuvo estudiando en un colegio de Otavalo hasta el año pasado, pero se retiró porque no podía escuchar y se sentía mal, cuando le atendimos ella no hablaba, era muy tímida, por no escuchar no le gustaba preguntar nuevamente para saber que le estaban diciendo, se sentía avergonzada de tener que virarse para poder escuchar con su oído derecho, su Madre con lagrimas en los ojos nos pidió que le ayudáramos a ponerse el audífono para que su hija pudiera seguir estudiando y no se quedara en su casa sin ninguna educación
En el mes de octubre luego de solicitar turno fuimos a Proaudio en Quito para que le revisaran su oído, le hicieron una audiometría y más exámenes especializados, allí la especialista nos explicó que la única forma de ayudar a Nayry era poniendo un audífono en su oído izquierdo, ya que con el derecho escuchaba mucho mejor
En el mes de noviembre fuimos a que le hicieran los moldes para los audífonos, y finalmente el 11 de diciembre le pusieron el audífono en su oído izquierdo, allí realizaron muchas pruebas para asegurarse que escuchaba bien, inclusive fuimos con su Madre a la calle para saber si escuchaba bien, Nayry estaba feliz pues escuchaba por primera vez el sonido de los autos que pasaban frente a Proaudio, se quedó un buen rato con una gran sonrisa en sus labios, repitiendo muchas veces gracias compañera Virginia, gracias a la Fundación Tandana. Ella quería seguir en la calle, pero teníamos que recibir el audífono con sus complementos, realizar todavía varias pruebas antes que fuera entregado en forma definitiva
El 16 de diciembre pude visitar a Nayry en su casa en la comunidad de Moraspungo para hacer una entrevista, saber cómo se sentía luego de varios días de estar usando el audífono, sentir como su vida y futuro había cambiado con la ayuda de Tandana
Salió con su Madre muy bonita vestida con su ropa de indígena, con una gran sonrisa nos recibió y con un abrazo nuevamente agradeció por la ayuda recibida , fue su Madre la que pidió hablar para expresar todo lo que sentía, la felicidad de ver como había cambiado la vida de su hija en tan poco tiempo, debieron esperar muchos años para recibir ayuda, ella expreso que no es posible conseguir quien les ayude, desafortunadamente en el Ministerio de Salud no todos los años disponen de presupuesto para dotar de audífonos a los pacientes de toda la provincia de Imbabura
Nosotros como fundación hemos conocido incontables casos en que los Padres motivados buscan ayuda para diferentes enfermedades de sus hijos y no encuentran o deben esperar por muchos años para conseguir algo de ayuda, sentimos la frustración, la limitación por no disponer de recursos económicos para solucionar las necesidades de sus hijos y familia, la mayoría de comuneros se dedica a la agricultura, cultivando para su propio sustento o trabajando como albañiles, en muchas ocasiones sin encontrar trabajo pasan semanas y meses viviendo de lo que produce su tierra
La madre de Nayry, Luz Maria Cachimuel, se siente muy feliz porque ya puede escuchar y esta mejorando poco a poco. Pide a la Fundación que sigan ayudando a las personas más necesitadas. Esta muy agradecida con la Fundación por haber llegado a la comunidad y haber elegido a su hija, necesitaba ayuda y no sabía a donde acudir,
Nayry dice que cuando le pusieron el audífono sintió diferente, quería llorar, escucho bien claro, le dio una alegría por escuchar a las personas, sentía mucha alegría, ahora puede escuchar, sale a la calle y se siente bien bonito. Dice que ha cambiado su vida desde que le pusieron el audífono, ahora no dice que repitan lo que dijeron porque escucha bien.
Ahora quiere seguir adelante, le gusta coser, quisiera hacer ropa, tener su propia marca de ropa y vender para ayudar a su familia y tener una vida mejor
Quiere agradecer a la Fundación por la ayuda, y pide que sigan ayudando a las personas que necesitan mas.
Son esos momentos en que quienes pertenecemos a la Fundación Tandana nos identificamos con la gente de la comunidad, el trabajo que venimos realizando en los 18 años de existencia está dirigido justamente a las personas que mas lo necesitan, a quienes no tienen los medios económicos para poder cambiar sus vidas mediante un tratamiento, una prótesis o en este caso a la provisión de un audífono para de esta forma proyectarse a un futuro, trazar sus metas para ayudar a sus familias a salir de la pobreza y a buscar mediante la educación y la salud una vida mejor.
Debemos agradecer a los Donadores, a esos Ángeles que siempre están dispuestos a responder a nuestros pedidos para destinar los fondos a diferentes personas que requieren ayuda para cambiar sus vidas, la gratitud que ellos expresan queremos transmitirles para que sientan que con su donación han cambiado profundamente la vida de personas que tienen un futuro por delante y que se sienten empoderados para llegar muy lejos en sus sueños.

Ready to achieve her dreams thanks to a new hearing aid
In October 2024, in one of the mobile medical clinics supported by The Tandana Foundation, we visited the community of Moraspungo in the parish of Quichinche. There I had the opportunity to see Nayry Flores Cachimuel again. Now 14 years old, she was born without the ear canal in her left ear. Her mother noticed she couldn’t hear when she was 4 years old. At the age of 8, she was referred to the San Vicente de Ibarra Hospital. The hospital did not have a solution to her problem, so they referred her to the Baca Ortiz Hospital in Quito, which specializes in children. Unfortunately, the specialists explained to her family that she was born without an auditory canal and that it was not possible to do any surgery to help her, so she could only use a hearing aid to help her hear. They provided her with one, but it did not last long.
For 5 years Nayry has not had a hearing aid because the poor economic situation of her family did not allow them to buy a new one. She was studying at a school in Otavalo until last year, but she stopped attending because she could not hear and she felt bad. When we first met her, she did not speak to us. She was very shy, and even though she could not hear, she did not like to ask for people to repeat themselves so she could know what they were saying. She felt embarrassed to have to turn around to be able to listen with her right ear. Her mother, with tears in her eyes, asked us to help her with the hearing aid so that her daughter could continue studying and would not end up staying at home without any education.
In October, after making an appointment, we went to Proaudio in Quito to have her hearing checked. They performed a hearing test and other specialized tests. The specialist explained that the only way to help Nayry was to put a hearing aid in her left ear, since she heard much better with her right ear.
In November, we went to have molds made for the hearing aid, and finally, on December 11, they put the hearing aid in her left ear. They performed many tests to make sure she could hear well. We even went with her mother to the street to see if she could hear well. Nayry was happy because for the first time, she heard the sound of cars passing in front of Proaudio. She stood for a long time with a big smile on her lips, repeating many times, “Thank you, my friend Virginia, and thank you to The Tandana Foundation.” She wanted to go home, but they still had to prepare the hearing aid and its accessories, and perform several tests before it was finally done.
On December 16, I was able to visit Nayry at her home in the Moraspungo community for an interview. I wanted to know how she felt after several days of using the hearing aid, and how her life and future had changed by having it.
She came out with her mother, dressed beautifully in her indigenous clothing. She greeted us with a big smile and, with a hug, thanked us again for the help she had received. It was her mother who asked to speak to express how much joy she felt in seeing how her daughter’s life had changed in such a short time. They had to wait many years to receive support. She expressed that it was not possible to find someone to help them. Unfortunately, the Ministry of Health does not have the budget to provide hearing aids to patients throughout the province of Imbabura every year.
We, as a foundation, have known countless cases in which motivated parents seek help for their children’s various illnesses and cannot find any, or they have to wait for many years to get any help. We feel the frustration and the limitations of not having the financial resources to meet the needs of their children and family. Most community members work in agriculture, growing crops for their own sustenance or working as masons. Often, without finding work, they spend weeks and months living off what their land produces.
Nayry’s mother, Luz Maria Cachimuel, feels very happy because she can hear now and is improving little by little. She asks the foundation to continue helping those most in need. She is very grateful to the foundation for reaching out to the community and choosing her daughter. She needed help and didn’t know where to turn.
Nayry says when they put the hearing aid on her, she felt different, she wanted to cry because she heard very clearly. It gave her joy to hear people. She feels so happy that she goes out and feels really beautiful. Her life has changed since she got the hearing aid. Now she doesn’t ask people to repeat themselves because she hears well.
Now she wants to move forward. She likes to sew, and she would like to make clothes and have her own clothing brand and sell them to help her family and have a better life. She wants to thank the foundation for the help, and hope they continue helping people who need it most.
These are the moments when those of us who belong to The Tandana Foundation identify with the people of the community. The work we have been doing in our 18 years of existence is aimed precisely at the people who need it most, those who do not have the financial means to change their lives through treatment, a prosthesis or, in this case, the help of a hearing aid. We support them so they can better succeed in the future, set their goals to help their families escape poverty, and seek a better life through education and health.
I thank the donors, those angels who are always willing to respond to our requests to allocate funds to different people who need help to change their lives. And I want to convey the gratitude our patients express so that the donors can feel that with their donation they have profoundly changed the lives of people who have a future ahead of them and who feel empowered to go very far in their dreams.

Prête à réaliser ses rêves grâce à une nouvelle aide auditive
En octobre 2024, nous avons visité l’une des cliniques médicales soutenues par la Fondation Tandana et la communauté de Moraspungo du comté de Quichinche. J’ai eu l’occasion d’y revoir Nayry Flores Cachimuel. Âgée aujourd’hui de 14 ans, elle est née sans canal auditif à l’oreille gauche. Sa mère a remarqué qu’elle n’entendait pas lorsqu’elle avait 4 ans. À l’âge de 8 ans, elle a été envoyée à l’hôpital San Vicente de Ibarra. L’hôpital n’ayant pas de solution à son problème, il l’a envoyée à l’hôpital pour enfants Baca Ortiz de Quito. Malheureusement, les spécialistes leur ont expliqué que la fillette était née sans canal auditif et qu’il n’était pas possible de l’opérer pour l’aider, de sorte qu’elle ne pouvait utiliser qu’un appareil auditif pour écouter. Ils lui en ont fourni un, mais il n’a pas duré longtemps.
Cela fait cinq ans que Nayry n’a pas d’appareil auditif, car la mauvaise situation économique de sa famille ne lui permettait pas d’en acheter un nouveau. Elle étudiait dans une école d’Otavalo jusqu’à l’année dernière, mais elle a arrêté à cause de sa surdité, qui la mettait mal à l’aise. Lorsque nous l’avons rencontrée, elle ne parlait pas. Elle était très timide, et même si elle ne pouvait pas écouter, elle n’aimait pas demander de répéter ce qu’on lui disait. Elle se sentait gênée de devoir se retourner pour pouvoir écouter de l’oreille droite. Sa mère, les larmes aux yeux, nous a demandé de l’aider à acheter un appareil auditif pour que sa fille puisse continuer à étudier et ne reste pas à la maison sans éducation.
En octobre, après avoir pris rendez-vous, nous nous sommes rendus chez Proaudio à Quito pour faire contrôler son audition. Ils ont effectué un test auditif et d’autres tests spécialisés. Le spécialiste nous a expliqué que la seule façon d’aider Nayry était de lui mettre un appareil auditif dans l’oreille gauche, car elle entendait beaucoup mieux de l’oreille droite.
En novembre, nous sommes allés faire faire des moules pour les appareils auditifs, et finalement, le 11 décembre, ils ont mis l’appareil auditif dans son oreille gauche. Ils ont effectué de nombreux tests pour s’assurer qu’elle entendait bien. Nous sommes même allés dans la rue avec sa mère pour voir si elle entendait bien. Nayry était heureuse, car pour la première fois, elle entendait le bruit des voitures qui passaient devant Proaudio. Elle est restée longtemps debout, un grand sourire aux lèvres, répétant plusieurs fois : « Merci, Virginia, et merci à la Fondation Tandana ». Elle voulait rentrer chez elle, mais il fallait encore préparer l’appareil auditif et ses accessoires, et effectuer plusieurs tests avant que ce soit enfin fait.
Le 16 décembre, j’ai pu rendre visite à Nayry chez elle, dans la communauté de Moraspungo, pour une interview. Je voulais savoir comment elle se sentait après plusieurs jours d’utilisation de l’aide auditive, et comment sa vie et son avenir avaient changé grâce à elle.
Elle est sortie avec sa mère, vêtue bellement de ses habits indigènes. Elle nous a accueillis avec un grand sourire et, en nous serrant dans ses bras, nous a remerciés une nouvelle fois pour l’aide qu’elle avait reçue. Sa mère a exprimé sa joie de voir comment la vie de sa fille avait changé en si peu de temps après avoir attendu de si nombreuses années avant de recevoir de l’aide. Elle a expliqué qu’il n’était pas possible de trouver quelqu’un pour les aider comme malheureusement, le ministère de la santé ne disposait pas du budget nécessaire pour fournir chaque année des appareils auditifs aux patients de la province d’Imbabura.
En tant que fondation, nous avons connu d’innombrables cas où des parents motivés cherchent de l’aide pour les différentes maladies de leurs enfants et n’en trouvent pas, ou doivent attendre de nombreuses années avant d’obtenir de l’aide. Nous ressentons la frustration et les limites liées au manque de ressources financières pour répondre aux besoins de leurs enfants et de leur famille. La plupart des membres de la communauté travaillent dans l’agriculture, cultivant des produits pour leur propre subsistance ou travaillant comme maçons. Souvent, sans trouver de travail, ils passent des semaines et des mois à vivre de ce que produit leur terre.
La mère de Nayry, Luz Maria Cachimuel, est très heureuse parce que sa fille peut entendre maintenant et que son état s’améliore peu à peu. Elle est très reconnaissante à la fondation d’avoir tendu la main à la communauté et d’avoir choisi sa fille, alors qu’elle avait besoin d’aide et ne savait pas vers qui se tourner. Elle lui demande également de continuer à aider ceux qui en ont le plus besoin.
Nayry dit que lorsqu’on lui a mis l’appareil auditif, elle s’est sentie différente, elle avait envie de pleurer parce qu’elle entendait très clairement. Cela lui a donné de la joie d’entendre les gens. Elle se sent tellement heureuse de sortir, de se sentir vraiment belle. Sa vie a changé depuis qu’elle a obtenu l’aide auditive. Maintenant, elle ne demande plus aux gens de répéter parce qu’elle entend bien.
Maintenant, elle veut aller de l’avant. Elle aime coudre, elle aimerait fabriquer des vêtements et avoir sa propre marque de vêtements et les vendre pour aider sa famille et avoir une vie meilleure. Elle tient à remercier la fondation pour son aide et espère qu’elle continuera à aider les personnes qui en ont le plus besoin.
Ce sont les moments où les membres de la Fondation Tandana s’identifient aux personnes de la communauté. Le travail que nous accomplissons depuis 18 ans vise précisément les personnes qui en ont le plus besoin, celles qui n’ont pas les moyens financiers de changer leur vie grâce à un traitement, une prothèse ou, dans le cas présent, l’aide d’un appareil auditif. Nous les soutenons pour qu’ils puissent mieux réussir leur avenir, se fixer des objectifs pour aider leur famille à sortir de la pauvreté, chercher une vie meilleure par l’éducation et la santé.
Je remercie les donateurs, ces anges qui sont toujours prêts à répondre à nos demandes d’allocation de fonds à différentes personnes qui ont besoin d’aide pour changer leur vie. Je veux leur transmettre la gratitude des bénéficiaires afin qu’ils sentent qu’avec leur don, ils ont profondément changé la vie de personnes qui ont un avenir devant elles et qui se sentent capables d’aller très loin dans leurs rêves.
