Through the Dr. Ash B. Varma M.D. Scholarship Program, The Tandana Foundation has supported 41 students in rural Mali to attend professional school. The program is a win-win: the scholarship recipients are able to pursue their educational goals while their communities benefit from the skills they gain.
Un nouveau tailleur devient entrepreneur, apportant des services indispensables à son village
Grâce au programme de bourses Dr. Ash B. Varma M.D., la Fondation Tandana a aidé 41 étudiants des zones rurales du Mali à fréquenter une école professionnelle. Le programme est gagnant-gagnant : les boursiers peuvent poursuivre leurs objectifs éducatifs tandis que leurs communautés bénéficient des compétences qu’ils acquièrent.
Ci-dessous, vous verrez les commentaires d’un boursier sur ce que la bourse lui a permis de faire et d’une résidente de son village qui a ressenti les impacts positifs de ses nouvelles capacités.
Hamidou Tembiné
Je suis Hamidou Tembiné. Je suis de Kansongo. Grâce à la fondation Tandana, j’ai été formé dans la coupe et couture à Bandiagara. Aujourd’hui, grâce à cette formation j’ai pu ouvrir mon propre atelier.
Cette année, pendant les fêtes de Noël et de Ramadan, j’ai eu beaucoup de clients et j’ai gagné assez d’argent pour subvenir à mes besoins. J’espère ensuite mieux équiper mon atelier en matériels de coupe et couture. Je suis très content de l’appui de la Fondation Tandana, parce que c’est grâce à ça que je suis devenu autonome.
C’est pour cela que je suis très engagé sur mes activités de coupe et couture, et je vais faire encore mieux. Comme tu vois mon atelier est petit, mon souhait est alors de construire un grand atelier de coupe et couture à Kansongo avec toutes sortes des différentes machines de couture, ce qui me permettra aussi d’y former des jeunes frères qui veulent apprendre à coudre et ouvrir leur propres ateliers de couture comme moi j’ai fait dans ma commune de Wadouba.
Fatou Tembiné
Je suis Fatou Tembiné. Je suis de Kansongo. Comme ici il n’y a pas assez d’ateliers de coupe et couture, pour coudre les habits de fête, on partait à Ningari. C’est très cher là-bas, et puis avec les déplacements et tous les aller-retour, ça nous coutait très cher. Cette année, on n’a pas eu cette difficulté parce que la Fondation Tandana a formé un jeune en coupe et couture qui a ouvert son atelier à Kansongo.
Grace à la formation, le jeune homme est capable de coudre tous les styles mais en moins chers. Il est très respectueux envers ses clients et il tient sa promesse. C’est lui qui a cousu ce complet que je porte, ça me vas très bien et je suis très contente de lui.

A new tailor becomes an entrepreneur, bringing much-needed services to his village
Through the Dr. Ash B. Varma M.D. Scholarship Program, The Tandana Foundation has supported 41 students in rural Mali to attend professional school. The program is a win-win: the scholarship recipients are able to pursue their educational goals while their communities benefit from the skills they gain.
Below hear from one scholarship recipient on what the scholarship has enabled him to do and from a resident of his village who has experienced the positive impacts from his new abilities.
Hamidou Tembine
I am Hamidou Tembine. I am from Kansongo and thanks to The Tandana Foundation, I have been trained as a tailor and sewer in Bandiagara. Today, thanks to this foundation, I have opened my own workshop.
This year, during Christmas and Ramadan festivities, I had plenty of clients and I earned enough money to cover my needs. Next, I hope to better equip my workshop with tailoring and sewing materials. I am very pleased with the support from The Tandana Foundation because it is thanks to this support that I have been able to become self-sufficient.
It is due to this that I am able to dedicate myself to my sewing and tailoring activities and I will continue to do better. As you can see, my workshop is small and I wish is to build a larger tailoring and sewing workshop in Kansongo with all kinds of different sewing machines and stock, so much so that it will allow for me to train younger men who wish to learn to tailor and open their own sewing workshops just like I did in my township of Wadouba.
Fatou Tembiné
I am Fatou Tembiné. I am from Kansongo. As there are not enough tailoring workshops here to sew festive clothes, we went to Ningari. It’s very expensive there, and then with the travel and all the back and forth, it cost us very much.
This year, we did not have this difficulty because The Tandana Foundation trained a young person in cutting and sewing who opened his workshop in Kansongo.
Thanks to the training, the young man is able to sew all styles but at a lower cost. He is very respectful to his customers and he keeps his promise. He’s the one who sewed this outfit that I’m wearing. It suits me very well and I’m very happy with him.

Un nuevo sastre se convierte en empresario y ofrece servicios muy necesarios en su pueblo
A través del Programa de Becas Dr. Ash B. Varma, la Fundación Tandana ha ayudado a 41 estudiantes de la zona rural de Mali a asistir a una escuela profesional. El programa es beneficioso para todos: los beneficiarios de las becas pueden perseguir sus objetivos educativos mientras que sus comunidades se benefician de las habilidades que adquieren.

A continuación, espero equipar mejor mi taller con materiales de costura y sastrería. Estoy muy contenta con el apoyo de la Fundación Tandana porque es gracias a este apoyo que he podido ser autosuficiente.
Es gracias a esto que puedo dedicarme a mis actividades de costura y sastrería y seguiré haciéndolo mejor. Como podéis ver, mi taller es pequeño y mi deseo es construir un taller de costura y sastrería más grande en Kansongo con todo tipo de máquinas de coser y material, tanto que me permita formar a hombres más jóvenes que quieran aprender a coser y abrir sus propios talleres de costura, tal como lo hice en mi municipio de Wadouba.

Soy Fatou Tembiné. Soy de Kansongo. Como aquí no hay suficientes talleres de costura para coser ropa de fiesta, nos fuimos a Ningari. Allí es muy caro y, además, con el viaje y todo el ida y vuelta, nos costó mucho.
Este año no tuvimos esa dificultad porque la Fundación Tandana formó a un joven en corte y costura que abrió su taller en Kansongo.
Gracias a la formación, el joven es capaz de coser todos los estilos pero a un coste menor. Es muy respetuoso con sus clientes y cumple sus promesas. Es él quien cosió este traje que llevo. Me queda muy bien y estoy muy contenta con él.
