A language is an important part of any culture, along with the identity of its people. The ability to speak, read, and write allows a community to communicate with one another and conduct business and everyday transactions. Despite being told otherwise, Sophie Sorgho learned that Tommo So, a language spoken by the Dogon people of Mali, has great value thanks to her participation in literacy classes organized by The Tandana Foundation in her village. In the following, Sophie shares her story.

Tommo So – un langage d’une valeur inimaginable

Une langue est une partie importante de toute culture, avec l’identité de ses habitants. La capacité de parler, de lire et d’écrire permet à une communauté de communiquer entre elles et de mener des transactions commerciales et quotidiennes. Sophie Sorgho a appris, malgré le contraire, que Tommo So, une langue parlée par le peuple Dogon du Mali, avait une grande valeur grâce à sa participation aux cours d’alphabétisation organisés par la Fondation Tandana dans son village. Dans ce qui suit, Sophie partage son histoire ci-dessous.

Je m’appelle Sophie Sorgho, je suis de Burkina, mariée à Kilégou et mère de 5 enfants. J’ai abandonné l’école en 6^em année, quand je suis venue au Mali. J’ai demandé à mon mari est ce que il y a d’écriture en Dogon, il m’a répondu oui, mais c’est avec deux langues seulement, le Toro So et le Kanma So, il n’y a pas d’alphabétisation en Tommo So. Il m’a dit aussi qu’il n’y a pas des cadres pour valoriser la langue Tommo S, et le Tommo So aussi n’est pas consideré riche pour qu’ont écrit avec.

Cette année par ma grande surprise quand la Fondation Tandana faisait le recrutement des femmes de groupes EPC, il nous a dit qu’ils vont nous former pendant 6 mois en Tommo So, je ne croyais pas qu’on peut écrire et lire même en Tommo So, parfois je pensais que l’écriture est pour les blancs seulement.

Aujourd’hui grâce à Fondation Tandana, le Tommo So aussi a une très grande valeur parce que en Dogon il y a encore une dizaines de langues qui n’ont pas d’écriture. C’est une chance pour nous les femmes Tommon de pouvoir écrire et lire dans notre propre langue grâce à Fondation Tandana. Durant les 6 mois je peux écrire, lire, et calculer.

Je fait seule les dessins et écriture dans mes tissus de tricotage alors que avant je payais quelqu’un pour les dessins et écritures sur les tissus.

Grace à ma participation comme auditrice au centre, j’ai eu beaucoup de courage de laver mes vêtements et les vêtements de mes enfants. Chaque jour avant d’aller au centre je me lave et je lave mes enfants et je leur fais porter des habits propres. Ce changement de comportement de propreté a beaucoup plu à mon mari.

Tommo So – a language of unimaginable value

Despite being told otherwise, Sophie Sorgho learned that Tommo So, a language spoken by the Dogon people of Mali, has great value thanks to her participation in literacy classes organized by The Tandana Foundation in her village. In the following, Sophie shares her story below.

My name is Sophie Sorgho. I am from Burkina Faso, and married to a man from Kilégou and mother of five children. I left school in sixth grade, when I came to Mali. I asked my husband how people write in Dogon, and he told me that people use two Dogon languages only: Toro So and Kanma So. He told me there is no literacy in Tommo So, and he also told me there are no Tommo So intellectuals to promote the value of learning the Tommo So language, and that Tommo So is not considered a rich language.

This year, to my great surprise, when The Tandana Foundation recruited women from Savings For Change groups, they told us that they will teach us for six months in Tommo So. I did not believe that one could even write and read in Tommo So. Sometimes I thought that writing was for white people only.

Today, thanks to The Tandana Foundation, the Tommo So language has a great value because among the Dogon there are still a dozen languages that have no writing. It is a great opportunity for us women to be able to write and read in our own language through The Tandana Foundation. After the six months, I was able to write, read, and calculate.

Now I do the drawings and writing for the embroidery on my fabrics alone, while before I paid someone to do the drawings and writings on the fabrics.

Thanks to my participation as a student at the center, I had a lot of courage to wash my clothes and the clothes of my children. Every day, before going to the center, I bathe myself and bathe my children and put clean clothes on them. This change in cleanliness has really pleased my husband.

Tommo So: un lenguaje de valor inimaginable

Un lenguaje es una importante parte de una cultura, conjunta con la identidad de esas personas. La habilidad para hablar, leer y escribir permite a la comunidad comunicarse entre sí , dirigir negocios y transacciones cotidianas. A pesar de hablar diferente, Sophie Sorgho aprendió Tommo So, un lenguaje hablado por personas de Dogon, Malí, lo que tiene un gran valor y es gracias a su participación en clases de alfabetización organizadas en su pueblo por la Fundación Tandana. A continuación, Sophie comparte su historia.

Mi nombre es Sophie Sorgho y soy de Burkina Faso. Estoy casada con un hombre de Kilegou y soy madre de cinco niños. Deje la escuela en sexto grado, cuando vine a Malí. Yo le pregunté a mi esposo como las personas escriben en Dogon, y él me dijo que las personas usan solamente dos idiomas en Dogon: Toro So y Kanma So. Él me dijo que no hay alfabetización en Tommo So, y que tampoco hay intelectuales de Tommo So que promuevan el valor de aprender ese lenguaje, y que no es considerado un lenguaje rico.

Este año, para mi gran sorpresa, cuando la Fundación Tandana reclutó mujeres del grupo Ahorros Para el Cambio, ellos nos dijeron que nos enseñarían por seis meses en Tommo So. Yo no creía que podría escribir y leer en Tommo So. Aveces pensaba que escribir era para blancos solamente.

Hoy, gracias a la Fundación Tandana, el lenguaje Tommo So tiene un gran valor, porque en Dogon todavía hay docenas de lenguas que no se escriben. Es una gran oportunidad para nosotras las mujeres tener la disposición de leer y escribir en nuestra propia lengua a través de la Fundación Tandana. Después de los seis meses, yo ya tenía la habilidad de leer, escribir y calcular.

Ahora, yo sola dibujo y escribo los bordados en mis telas, mientras en el pasado yo le pagaba a alguien para que escribiera y dibujara en las telas.

Gracias a mi participación como estudiante en el centro, tengo el á de lavar mi ropa y la de mis niños. Todos los días, antes de ir al centro, tomo un baño, baño a mis niños, y les pongo ropa limpia. Este cambio en la limpieza es realmente placentera para mi esposo.
