For a long time, the residents of Kansongo, Mali have dreamed of having a school for their children. On paper, the Malian government created a school for them, but without providing financial resources for the infrastructure. So, no school could be constructed.

From empty hands to selling pancakes

Due to ongoing insecurity in parts of Mali, The Tandana Foundation launched a program for students of displaced families who are now living in Bandiagara. At first, the program focused on providing educational and food support to families so the students could attend school and settle into their new town. This year, Tandana expanded the program to also include training and resources for the parents to pursue income-generating activities so they could better support their families.

Leaving a Legacy of Hope: The gift of grain banks in Mali

Food security remains an urgent concern in the Bandiagara District of Mali, and it is getting worse due to insecurity and the impacts of climate change hurting crop yields. Residents of villages around the region have explored a number of ways to address the crisis, including several important projects that The Tandana Foundation has supported, including establishing gardens, expanding stock ponds, and launching grain banks.

Last year, the Tandana Foundation launched a program to support students and their families who have been displaced to the city Bandiagara due to ongoing insecurity in other parts of Mali. The program helps students and their parents with food, school supplies, and social integration into their new environment.

The indomitable spirit of determination, hope, and humor among displaced families

Hamidou, Coordinator of Tandana’s Displaced Students’ Program, and I walked up a dusty road to the corner where he had arranged to meet Ambajugo Kassogué, grandfather of one of the students in the program. We had invited two adult family members of students in this program to travel to Bamako so that I could meet them and learn more about their experiences. Because of the insecurity that has forced them to leave their homes, it is unsafe for me as a foreigner to travel to the area where Tandana’s programs operate, so every year we organize a meeting in Mali’s capital. I relish this opportunity to spend time face to face with our team members and some of our partners.

Providing life-saving medical care while showing the value of Western medicine

After opening in October 2022, the Sal Health Center has been serving the approximately 9,000 residents in and around the Sal Sector of Wadouba Township in Mali with access to local basic health care services. This medical care was much needed by the residents, who previously had to travel far distances to receive this care, before The Tandana Foundation partnered with the community to build the new center.

The productive environmental efforts of the Olouguelemo Association this rainy season

34 member villages of the Olouguelemo Association in partnership with The Tandana Foundation carried out a number of environmental protection and restoration projects throughout the rainy season (July-September) in Mali. These projects included the enlargement of stock ponds, a reforestation campaign, erosion control work, and the collection of data to track the results of its forest regeneration efforts.

Hear what students and community members are saying about the new Dani school

In partnership with The Tandana Foundation, local residents recently celebrated the opening of a much-needed elementary school in Dani, Mali. Thanks to this new school, over 300 students are able to learn in classrooms with proper desks, chairs, and other resources that facilitate an effective educational environment.

A few inspiring thoughts from participants of Tandana’s women’s programs in Mali

Never underestimate the impact of being able to do something you could not before.

Through literacy and numeracy classes, leadership workshops, support in registering women’s associations, and startup funding for income-generating enterprises, the programs organized by The Tandana Foundation in rural Mali are supporting women in learning to read, write, calculate, work together in associations, and generate income. These skills increase their confidence, independence, success in economic activities, and recognition as agents of local decision-making.

Positive marks: Tandana’s displaced student’s program finishes its first school year

In its pilot year, The Tandana Foundation’s program to help students’ whose families have fled to Bandiagara from ongoing insecurity in other parts of Mali continue their education was largely successful. The majority of the 75 students passed to the next grade year and every participating family was grateful for the support they received through the new program.

Impressed by Tandana’s unique approach, he’s now taken on a long-term role in Mali

In July 2023, Aly Ombotimbé joined The Tandana Foundation’s team as a security guard and facilities assistant in Mali. In this role, Ombotimbé provides security for the organization’s Bandiagara office, welcomes visitors, organizes meals and supplies, sends and receives mail, and assists the team with other tasks as needed.

There is a newfound confidence among many women across the Tommoguiné region of Mali. They are calling out cheaters in the markets, joining together to form income-generating associations, and not only attending township hall meetings, but becoming leaders in their villages.

Pond expansions help provide needed food support during lean season

Last year, members of villages in Wadouba Township of Mali expanded a number of stock ponds by hand with support from The Tandana Foundation. The goal of the effort, which was organized by the village-run Olougelemo Association, was to help combat the impacts of an urgent food crisis facing the region by both providing needed food aid and supplies at that time as well as contributing to the production of more food later on.

What has changed the lives of these women in Mali?

There have now been 2,700 participants in the women’s literacy and numeracy classes and 550 participants in the women’s leadership workshops that were launched by The Tandana Foundation in partnership with communities in rural Mali. In addition, Tandana also helps support 60 women’s associations that have been started in the villages.
